Like a River

Dear God: For decades, I’ve sung, “I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace like a river in my soul.”

Unfortunately, I haven’t always understood exactly what peace was or how to get and keep it. The lyric writer didn’t pull that phrase out of thin air; it came from Isaiah’s description in Isaiah 48:18.

Having ridden class five rapids a few times, I know that rivers aren’t always placid, slow-moving bodies of water. God’s peace can follow us as our life takes twists and turns and rolls over boulders. To have peace as such is to have security and tranquility of heart and mind. God, help me submit to your trustworthy authority to be filled with the peace that only You can give.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
